watchOS 27 beta 3 focuses on usability and battery improvements

Apple has released the third developer beta of watchOS 27, arriving two weeks after the previous version as the company continues refining its upcoming smartwatch software. The update is available to registered developers through the Watch app on a paired iPhone, requiring the watch to be charging, connected to Wi-Fi, and holding at least 50 percent battery life. Notably, the beta excludes the Apple Watch Ultra 3 despite broader compatibility claims for the operating system, a detail that has already drawn user attention in community discussions.

watchOS 27 centers on enhanced Siri capabilities, including more natural back-and-forth conversations and access to both general knowledge and personal data for contextual responses. This version of Siri demands a compatible iPhone supporting Apple Intelligence, starting with the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models, which further narrows access for users with older devices. A new Dynamic app grid surfaces Siri-suggested applications, while Smart Stack recommendations aim for greater relevance throughout the day.

Additional features include the ability to locate a parked car directly from the wrist, view pinned messages, receive noise level alerts, and access identity or transit cards more readily. The Liquid Glass interface element has seen legibility improvements, addressing potential readability concerns in varied lighting conditions. Workout Buddy now functions independently of a nearby iPhone and introduces progressive metrics for distance, pace, and duration, offering more granular feedback during training sessions. Apple has also consolidated Find My functionality into a single app with Precision Finding support and implemented performance tweaks intended to enhance battery efficiency.

These changes reflect Apple’s ongoing push to make the Apple Watch a more autonomous and intelligent companion, reducing reliance on the iPhone for core tasks. However, the hardware requirements for advanced Siri features underscore a familiar pattern in recent updates, where flagship experiences become increasingly tied to the latest devices. This approach drives upgrades but risks alienating owners of still-capable older watches, as evidenced by watchOS 27 dropping support for several prior models including the Series 8, first-generation Ultra, and second-generation SE.

Beta testing for major watchOS releases typically follows a predictable summer progression, with early builds focusing on stability for announced features and later ones addressing compatibility and power management. The exclusion of certain hardware from specific betas, while not uncommon, highlights the complexities of supporting a diverse lineup of Apple Watch models with varying chipsets and capabilities. Performance optimizations in this round suggest Apple is prioritizing everyday reliability, an area where previous iterations have occasionally fallen short during initial public releases.

As development advances toward a September launch, further refinements are expected. The combination of improved autonomy, smarter suggestions, and health-focused tools could strengthen the Apple Watch’s position, provided real-world testing confirms meaningful gains over existing versions. Users tracking the beta should monitor battery impact and Siri accuracy closely, as these often prove decisive in long-term satisfaction.
