Honor Earbuds 5e launch brings budget ANC and battery focus

Honor has introduced a new pair of wireless earbuds aimed at the budget segment of the crowded audio market. The Earbuds 5e, unveiled alongside the company’s latest smartphone in China, adopt a semi-in-ear stem design that prioritizes comfort and lightness at just four grams per bud. With an IP54 rating, they offer modest protection against dust and sweat, suitable for everyday use but hardly built for extreme conditions.

At the core sits a 12mm dynamic driver featuring a diamond-like carbon diaphragm, chosen for its rigidity to potentially reduce distortion compared to more common materials. Audio support includes the LHDC 5.0 codec and Hi-Res certification, enabling higher bitrate transmission that could appeal to users with compatible devices. Adaptive active noise cancellation promises up to 52dB peak reduction, averaging 28dB across frequencies, adjusting automatically to surroundings. Call quality relies on three microphones per bud enhanced by AI processing and wind resistance up to 6m/s, a practical addition for urban environments where background interference remains a common complaint in budget options.

Battery performance stands out on paper. The buds deliver up to nine hours of playback without ANC and five and a half with it enabled, extending to 45 hours and 28 hours respectively with the 550mAh charging case. A quick 10-minute charge yields around three hours of listening, addressing one of the more frustrating aspects of true wireless designs. Standard controls cover touch gestures, wear detection, and multi-device pairing, while deeper AI tools like real-time translation across 15 languages and meeting transcription require a matching Honor phone, limiting broader accessibility.

Priced at an introductory 299 yuan, roughly $44, with a regular tag of 349 yuan or about $52, the Earbuds 5e position themselves as an affordable alternative in a market flooded with options boasting similar feature sets. Recent launches from competitors underscore the intensity: Lenovo’s Yoga Earbuds offer 40dB ANC and 36 hours total battery, while Edifier’s FitBuds Turbo bring LDAC support, 49dB cancellation, and 40 hours of playtime. Honor’s entry holds its own on battery claims and peak noise reduction numbers, yet real-world consistency often varies across brands, particularly with adaptive systems that can struggle in unpredictable settings or drain power faster than advertised. The reliance on ecosystem-specific features also echoes a familiar industry tactic, encouraging brand loyalty at the expense of seamless cross-platform use.

In the wider context of wireless audio, mid-range earbuds have improved dramatically over the past few years, with meaningful gains in battery life and noise cancellation trickling down from premium models. Still, many users report diminishing returns beyond certain price thresholds, where fit, reliability, and unadorned sound quality matter more than incremental spec bumps. The Earbuds 5e appear competent on specifications but will ultimately be judged by sustained performance in daily scenarios like commutes, workouts, or calls rather than marketing benchmarks. Availability begins with pre-orders in China, followed by wider sales later this week.
