Huawei Mate X7 arrives in the UAE with focus on durability and imaging

Huawei has made its latest foldable smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate X7, available in the UAE, positioning it as a more fully developed entry in a category that has often struggled to move beyond early adopters. Rather than framing the device as a radical reinvention, Huawei’s approach with the Mate X7 appears focused on addressing long-standing weaknesses in foldables, particularly around camera quality, durability, and battery life, while maintaining a large-format design.

At the centre of the Mate X7 is an 8-inch foldable inner display paired with a 6.49-inch LTPO outer screen. The dual-screen setup is designed to support both productivity and everyday smartphone use without forcing users to constantly unfold the device. Resolution remains high on both panels, with the inner display aimed at delivering more detailed visuals for media consumption, multitasking, and photography review. This balance reflects a growing trend in foldables toward practicality rather than novelty.

Huawei places significant emphasis on imaging, equipping the Mate X7 with what it calls a True-to-Colour Camera system. The company claims a substantial increase in light intake and improved colour accuracy, supported by ultra-high dynamic range video technology. In practical terms, this allows the device to capture 4K video with more consistent colour reproduction and finer detail, narrowing the gap between foldables and traditional flagship smartphones, which have historically held the advantage in camera performance.

Durability is another area where Huawei has made structural changes. The outer display is protected by Kunlun Glass, while the inner screen uses a layered composite structure that combines impact resistance with flexibility. The hinge and middle frame rely on reinforced materials, including aviation-grade aluminium, and the device carries IP58 and IP59 ratings for dust and water resistance. These choices suggest a deliberate effort to make the Mate X7 better suited to everyday use rather than careful handling.

Powering the device is a 5,600mAh silicon-carbon battery, supported by 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. Battery life has been a consistent concern for foldables, and Huawei’s decision to prioritise capacity and charging speed reflects broader consumer expectations for all-day reliability.

AI-based features round out the experience, particularly in photography. Tools such as AI Remove and AI Best Expression are designed to streamline post-processing and group shots, taking advantage of the larger screen space without introducing overly complex workflows.

Now available through Huawei’s official online and retail channels in the UAE, the Mate X7 represents a measured attempt to stabilise the foldable category by focusing on refinement rather than spectacle.
