Instagram adds Meta AI tools for creative story editing and object removal

Instagram is rolling out a suite of new AI-powered editing tools that bring Meta’s generative technology directly into the Stories creation process. The update allows users to edit photos and videos using text prompts—adding, removing, or restyling elements within the app—without needing third-party software.

The new features appear under a Restyle option in Instagram Stories, represented by a small brush icon when uploading an image. From there, users can type prompts describing how they’d like Meta AI to modify the image, such as changing the subject’s outfit, altering the lighting or mood, or transforming the overall scene. Meta suggests focusing on five key aspects—subject, lighting, composition, style, and location—for best results.

One of the most notable tools is Remove, which works similarly to Google’s Magic Eraser. It lets users erase unwanted objects or people simply by typing a request like “remove these people” or “remove the car.” Conversely, Meta’s Add or Change function enables AI-generated additions or modifications—for instance, swapping hair color, inserting props like balloons, or changing backgrounds to fit a theme.

Alongside manual prompts, Instagram has added preset AI styles that function much like filters but rely on generative modeling. Options include Sketch, 8-bit, Pink, Manga, Watercolor, and Anime, among others. Each preset reinterprets an image or video according to a specific visual theme, opening up new creative possibilities for users beyond the app’s traditional filter system.

The integration marks Meta’s latest move to embed generative AI into its core products. While Meta AI’s editing capabilities have been available through standalone tools, this is the first time they’ve been fully accessible inside Instagram. The update reflects the company’s broader push to make creative AI more intuitive and mainstream across its social platforms.

Meta says the update is rolling out gradually and will reach all users over the coming days. Once available, users can access the AI features directly within the Instagram app—no external chatbot or companion app required. Expect an influx of creatively altered Stories as users begin experimenting with the new tools, blending AI-generated imagery with traditional storytelling formats.
