Sony has announced a new addition to its PlayStation-branded hardware lineup: the Pulse Elevate desktop speakers. Unlike the company’s traditional home theater systems, these are designed specifically for a desk setup, targeting gamers who use monitors rather than TVs with their consoles. Their debut at Sony’s recent State of Play event highlights a broader shift in how the company is supporting desktop-style console gaming, following earlier moves like adding 1440p resolution support for the PS5 and launching the Inzone monitor series.
The Pulse Elevate speakers are available in both black and white and are expected to ship in 2026. While Sony hasn’t released full technical specifications, the system is notable for offering wireless audio over the same proprietary protocol used by the PlayStation 5 and Sony’s Pulse headphones. This approach promises lower latency and fewer compression artifacts than typical Bluetooth, addressing a common trade-off in wireless speaker setups.
Flexibility is another selling point. Each speaker has an internal battery, allowing them to function untethered from a power outlet when needed. They recharge on included docks, which should make moving them between rooms or setups more practical. For users in areas prone to power outages, the battery option could also provide an uninterrupted audio solution.
Sony has also chosen to integrate bass drivers directly into the speakers rather than relying on a separate subwoofer. This is a departure from the typical 2.1 desktop configuration popularized by brands like Logitech. While it remains to be seen how well these built-in woofers perform, eliminating the need for a bulky subwoofer could free up space under the desk while still delivering a satisfying low-end response.
Price and performance will ultimately determine how well the Pulse Elevate speakers are received. Sony has a mixed but often well-regarded history in consumer audio—its WH-1000XM4 headphones remain some of the most widely recommended for all-purpose use, while its lower-cost Pulse gaming headsets have built a reputation for offering strong value. If these new desktop speakers can balance sound quality, wireless convenience, and affordability, they could become a compelling option in a market that has seen little disruption in recent years.
