Spaceballs 2: the schwartz awakens in 2027

Nearly four decades after Mel Brooks first spoofed Star Wars, Spaceballs is officially getting a sequel. Spaceballs 2 is moving forward with a mix of returning cast members and new faces, including some surprising names.

George Wyner is back as Colonel Sandurz, reprising his role as the sycophantic sidekick to Rick Moranis’s Dark Helmet. Joining him is Anthony Carrigan, recently seen in James Gunn’s Superman and season two of Twisted Metal, though his role in the parody has not been disclosed. They join returning stars Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Moranis, and Brooks himself, alongside new additions Lewis Pullman, Keke Palmer, and co-writer Josh Gad.

The announcement was accompanied by a photo of the cast gathered at a table read. Gad, who is co-writing the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, revealed earlier this month that filming would begin in Australia. While specific story details are still under wraps, Lewis Pullman is confirmed to play the son of Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and Queen Vespa (Zuniga), setting the stage for a new generation of characters. The creative team has hinted that, much like the original, the film will parody not only Star Wars but also a broad swath of modern sci-fi, with the sequel trilogy providing fertile ground for fresh material.

Brooks contributed to the story but is stepping back from directing, handing the reins to Josh Greenbaum, whose credits include the comedies Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar and Strays, as well as the documentary Will & Harper. Gad brings experience from Apple TV+’s Central Park and NBC’s short-lived 1600 Penn, while Samit and Hernandez have worked on projects like Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

The original Spaceballs left its characters scattered across the galaxy, with Lone Starr marrying Vespa and the villains stranded on the Planet of the Apes. Since then, Brooks has joked about a sequel under the working title The Search for More Money, but development stalled for years. With a new director, fresh writing team, and a cast that blends nostalgia with new talent, the project now appears closer than ever to reaching theaters.

Spaceballs 2 is slated for release in 2027, giving fans time to speculate on which sci-fi universes will get skewered next.
