Blizzard is blurring the line between basketball and esports this season, teaming up with NBA All-Star Luka Dončić for Overwatch 2’s Season 18. Dončić, a long-time fan of the hero shooter, isn’t just lending his name—he’s already achieved Grandmaster rank and cracked the Top 500 leaderboard in Stadium Mode, Overwatch 2’s recent competitive twist on the formula.
“I’m known for being competitive on the basketball court, but I bring the same energy when I play Overwatch,” Dončić said. “It’s special to be part of the game in a way that other players can share in.”
The partnership will be visible both in-game and in the real world. In Los Angeles, Dallas, and Katowice—where Dončić is currently playing EuroBasket for Slovenia—fans will spot Overwatch-themed billboards featuring his likeness. In Dallas, ads will even be placed just outside the Mavericks’ home arena.
Inside the game, players will see Dončić’s “Sharpshooter 77” moniker attached to new content. Blizzard is rolling out a player title, a loot box drop of 77 items, a golden basketball weapon charm stamped with his jersey number, and a themed spray. Stadium Mode heroes are also getting Luka-inspired variants such as “Fadeaway Fan” Cassidy, “Luka Dunkcic” Lúcio, and “Hooper Trooper” Zarya.
Season 18 itself brings a hefty slate of changes beyond the crossover. A new water-based Support hero named Wuyang joins the roster, alongside more than 60 new perks. Stadium Mode expands with Winston, Pharah, and Brigitte added to the lineup, plus an All-Star D.Va skin. Tracer is set to arrive mid-season. Blizzard is also experimenting with new ways to play: Quick Play Queue introduces an unranked best-of-five format, Payload Race mode has both teams pushing carts simultaneously, and a new Draft feature eliminates mirror matchups while adding bans and role-based pick orders for strategic variety.
For Blizzard, the partnership taps into Dončić’s global popularity while giving Overwatch 2 another cultural crossover to energize fans. For players, it’s a reminder of how far Stadium Mode has come since its launch earlier this year, when it quickly became one of the game’s most-played modes. With Dončić’s competitive edge now baked into its identity, Season 18 looks like it’s aiming squarely at both esports fans and casual players looking for a fresh hook.
