Meta’s Threads surpasses 400 million monthly active users in two years

Meta’s Threads has surpassed 400 million monthly active users, just two years after launching as a rival to Twitter (now X). Instagram head Adam Mosseri shared the milestone in a Threads post, describing the platform’s evolution from “a zany idea to compete with Twitter” into what he called a meaningful space for open conversation.

The figure marks a gain of 50 million monthly users in the past quarter, following Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s April announcement that Threads had passed 350 million MAUs. By comparison, X has more than 600 million monthly active users, based on previous statements from its former CEO Linda Yaccarino.

Recent data from Similarweb indicates Threads is closing the gap with X in mobile engagement. In June 2025, the Threads mobile app recorded 115.1 million daily active users across iOS and Android, a 127.8% increase year-over-year. X saw 132 million daily mobile users in the same month, reflecting a 15.2% annual decline.

However, X still holds a significant advantage in web traffic. Similarweb reported 145.8 million average daily web visits worldwide for X in June, compared to just 6.9 million for Threads.

Threads’ growth has been fueled by a steady rollout of new features over the past year, including direct messaging, fediverse integration, customizable feeds, and AI-powered enhancements. The platform’s rapid adoption suggests Meta is making inroads in a market long dominated by X, though significant gaps remain in certain engagement metrics.
