Apple’s rumored 12.9-Inch MacBook could launch at $599 this year

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new 12.9-inch MacBook that could start at $599, according to fresh supply chain reports. If accurate, it would mark Apple’s lowest MacBook entry price to date and signal a direct push into the budget laptop segment currently dominated by Chromebooks.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first outlined the project in June, describing it as a “more affordable” model positioned below the MacBook Air. The new device is said to run on Apple’s A18 Pro chip—the same processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro—making it the first Mac to use an iPhone-class chip instead of the company’s M-series processors. While the A18 Pro would deliver solid performance for everyday tasks, it lacks features found in M-series chips, such as Thunderbolt support, higher memory capacity, and advanced external display options.

DigiTimes, which has now corroborated Kuo’s report, suggests the laptop will launch between $599 and $699. The display is expected to measure 12.9 inches, slightly smaller than the current MacBook Air’s 13.6-inch panel. Mass production of components could begin as early as the third quarter of 2025, with final assembly by Quanta in the fourth quarter. This timeline could put the device on sale by late 2025 or early 2026.

Market projections estimate annual shipments between 5 million and 7 million units, potentially boosting overall MacBook sales by up to 40%. The model is expected to feature an ultra-thin, lightweight design and could be offered in multiple finishes, including Silver, Blue, Pink, and Yellow.

While the lack of Thunderbolt connectivity means the device will likely rely on standard USB-C ports, this may not deter cost-conscious buyers. For customers seeking the lowest-cost new MacBook directly from Apple, the rumored pricing could be a strong draw—though existing discounts on M1 and M2 MacBooks may offer better performance for a similar cost.
