It’s that time of year again: May The 4th Be With You!

It’s that time of the year again, the time we pull out our dusty lightsabers (in my case a fluorescent light tube spraypainted blue), when we sit back to mourn the destruction of Alderaan and ultimately the day when we boot up the old VCR’s and watch all 6 episodes in their true, unblemished magnetic-tape form. Or you could pre order the entire saga off Amazon in Blu-Ray form, though that comes with a few alterations that might make purists retch. Of course if you think physical copies are a thing of the past, you can also pick it up on iTunes.

It’s also that time of the year when we stare open mouthed at friends who nonchalantly claim that they’ve never seen a single episode of Star Wars. Was that the one with the Enterprise? What’s a Wookie? Did you mean cookie? When you explain the significance of the day they quickly hold up their hand in an effort to appease you and split their fingers into a V shape and say “Live long and prosper”, not knowing their own lives are forfeit with that statement.

And of course the time old repetition by all fans of Star Wars that the only episodes worth watching are Episodes IV to VI (even though half the Star Wars fans loved the first 3 episodes but that doesn’t matter because Jar-Jar was a nutter). The Rebels and Jedi’s are toasted over drinks while the Empire is cursed at and only a few dare to mutter about the Dark Side of the Force.

We take time out of our hectic schedules to finally build that Lego X-Wing that we bought 5 years ago, the same X-Wing that we shelved last year because we couldn’t figure out where the damn pieces went. Or you could play Lego Star Wars. And if you got your paycheck and are thinking of blowing it all in one purchase, why don’t you head down to the Noble Collection store in Dubai Mall and buy yourself a real (i.e high quality fake) lightsaber!

Suffice to say it’s that one day of the year where greetings in any language are replaced by a universal saying:

May the 4th be with you!
