Sandisk launches fastest SSD yet with WD_BLACK SN8100 Gen 5.0

Sandisk has introduced the WD_BLACK SN8100 NVMe SSD, its latest high-performance internal drive built on PCIe Gen 5.0 technology. With advertised sequential read speeds of up to 14,900MB/s and storage capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB, the new SSD targets gamers, creative professionals, and users with demanding AI workloads who need both speed and storage scalability.

The launch reflects growing demand for faster storage in PCs driven by resource-intensive applications like 4K and 8K video editing, real-time rendering, and machine learning. PCIe Gen 5.0, the newest generation of the interface, offers double the theoretical bandwidth of PCIe Gen 4.0, and the SN8100 takes advantage of that leap to deliver improved throughput and lower latency.

Sandisk claims the SN8100 is over 100% more power-efficient than its previous PCIe Gen 4.0 drives, a notable shift as performance gains often come at the cost of energy consumption and heat. The SSD is built using Sandisk’s BiCS8 3D TLC NAND and includes firmware optimizations that enable it to operate at an average of 7 watts or less during normal use, helping it avoid the need for expensive cooling solutions.

The SN8100 will also be available in a version equipped with a low-profile passive heatsink. Made from anodized aluminum, the design avoids reliance on fans or external power while managing thermal loads. A customizable RGB LED element caters to users integrating the drive into a stylized build. Heatsink models will be offered in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB variants, with an 8TB model set to launch later this year.

With up to 2,400 terabytes written (TBW) endurance on the 4TB model, the SN8100 is positioned to handle prolonged, heavy workloads such as video rendering, real-time 3D modeling, or large AI dataset processing. Random performance metrics for the 2TB to 4TB models exceed 2.3 million IOPS, placing the drive among the highest-performing client SSDs currently on the market.

The announcement comes amid increasing competition in the Gen 5 SSD space, as manufacturers work to optimize not just speed but thermal and power performance for next-generation desktops and workstations. While PCIe Gen 5.0 hardware adoption has been gradual, driven in part by the rollout of newer Intel and AMD platforms, demand is expected to rise through 2025 as support becomes more widespread in both gaming and professional PC ecosystems.

The WD_BLACK SN8100 NVMe SSD will be available in major markets starting this summer, including in the Middle East, where the 8TB variant is expected to launch first. Additional models with and without the heatsink option are scheduled to follow in the fall.
