Superman reboot trailer reveals Krypto, robot assistants, and a battered Man of Steel

The newest glimpse into Superman, the upcoming installment in the rebooted DC Universe, shifts focus away from high-flying heroics and instead introduces a side of the Man of Steel that’s rarely explored on screen—one where he’s not soaring through the sky, but being dragged home, barely conscious, by his loyal dog.

Unveiled during Warner Bros.’ presentation at CinemaCon and now available online, the trailer gives fans their most detailed look yet at director James Gunn’s take on Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet. This time around, the caped hero is in rough shape—his injuries so severe that he can’t walk or even lift off the ground. The footage opens with Superman pleading for his dog, Krypto, to carry him back to safety. What follows is both bizarre and oddly charming: Krypto tugging the hero’s battered body across icy terrain, heading toward an unusual version of the Fortress of Solitude.

This iteration of Superman’s iconic hideaway introduces a team of robotic assistants—draped in capes, no less—who are tasked with patching the hero back together. The moment walks a tightrope between absurdity and science fiction spectacle. One particularly memorable shot sees the robots focusing sunlight to accelerate Superman’s healing process, echoing the solar-powered nature of his abilities in the comics.

Beyond this surreal recovery sequence, the trailer also offers extended looks at other key characters who will be part of this new cinematic world. Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) appears briefly, hinting at her central role, while glimpses of Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) suggest a broader ensemble cast than most Superman films have featured in the past.

Rather than sticking with the stoic and solitary tone that has often defined previous Superman movies, this version leans into eccentricity. It presents a hero not just surrounded by other superpowered individuals, but also supported by non-human allies that are equal parts comical and uncanny.

With a release date set for July 11, Superman appears poised to set the tone for a new chapter in DC’s evolving cinematic universe. While fans wait to see how this more eclectic take will be received, this latest trailer makes it clear that audiences should expect something far removed from the usual gritty realism. Instead, Gunn seems to be offering a stylized blend of classic superhero drama and offbeat science fiction—a gamble that might just resonate with viewers looking for something fresh in the superhero genre.
