Studio Ghibli AI art now free on ChatGPT, with a daily limit

ChatGPT’s highly talked-about image generator—known for producing portraits in a style reminiscent of Studio Ghibli animation—is now available to anyone with a free account. The tool, powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, had previously been reserved for paying subscribers under the ChatGPT Plus plan. But as of April 1st, it’s open to all users. And no, it’s not an April Fools’ joke.

The AI-powered image creator gained traction quickly across platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and Instagram. Users shared Ghibli-style transformations of themselves, friends, and even pets, sparking a wave of artistic content with a distinct whimsical aesthetic. The release for free users now makes it easier than ever to jump on the trend—though there are limitations in place to prevent overload.

According to prior statements from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the demand for this feature has placed a significant load on the platform’s infrastructure. He noted that GPU resources were being pushed to their limits due to the high volume of image requests, prompting the company to introduce usage caps, especially for non-paying users.

In practice, free users are limited to a handful of image generations per day. Though Altman initially mentioned a cap of three, some users have reported only being able to generate a single image before hitting a cooldown timer. After generating one Ghibli-style portrait, a message within the ChatGPT interface informs users when their daily reset will occur. To continue generating images without waiting, users are nudged toward upgrading to the paid version of ChatGPT, which unlocks broader access and more functionality.

It’s worth noting that the image feature depends on GPT-4o specifically. If users attempt to generate images without this model active, they receive a message stating that their request can’t be fulfilled because attachments aren’t supported on the default free-tier model, GPT-4o mini.

Despite the limits, the tool offers an easy and engaging way for users to experiment with AI-generated art. The Studio Ghibli-style filter, while not officially affiliated with the animation studio, taps into the nostalgic charm of its design elements—dreamlike backgrounds, expressive character faces, and painterly textures. This has made it one of the most talked-about AI image generators in recent weeks.

For those interested in trying it, all that’s required is a free ChatGPT account. But if you plan on using it extensively, be prepared to either wait for your daily limit to reset or consider the paid tier for uninterrupted access.
