Google’s Circle to Search gains text analysis capabilities with AI Overviews integration

Google is expanding the functionality of its Circle to Search feature by integrating new text analysis capabilities within AI Overviews. The latest Google app beta introduces three new “chips” that allow users to summarize, explain, and extract text from images directly within the search interface.

This enhancement aims to streamline information retrieval for users encountering text-heavy images. By utilizing Circle to Search, users can now access concise summaries, detailed explanations, and extract copyable text from visual content.

The new chips are activated when a user circles an image containing a significant amount of text. AI Overviews then presents three options: “Summarize,” “Explain,” and “Extract Text.” The “Summarize” chip generates an AI-powered summary, highlighting key points and incorporating external sources. The “Explain” chip provides a more detailed summary based primarily on the image’s text. The “Extract Text” chip isolates and presents all copyable text within the image.

A demonstration video showcases the functionality of these new chips, illustrating their ability to quickly process and analyze text within images.

The rollout of these features is currently occurring server-side within the latest Google app beta. While the features may also be accessible through Google Lens, this has not been officially confirmed. Google has not yet released a formal announcement regarding these new AI Overviews chips.

These enhancements represent an evolution in Google’s search capabilities, moving beyond simple image recognition to incorporate advanced text analysis. The integration of AI-powered summarization and extraction tools aims to provide users with more efficient and contextually relevant search results.

Users who prefer not to utilize AI Overviews can disable the feature within their Google app settings.

The integration of these text analysis tools within Circle to Search and AI Overviews signifies Google’s ongoing effort to refine and expand its search functionalities, adapting to the evolving landscape of digital information consumption.
