Sony’s next-gen headphones (WH-1000XM6) are very close, and we’re excited!

Sony’s upcoming flagship headphones, the WH-1000XM6, have been the subject of recent speculation following a filing with the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The leaked documents, discovered by The Walkman Blog, offer a glimpse into potential upgrades that could address some limitations of the current model, the WH-1000XM5.

One notable detail in the filing is the inclusion of Bluetooth 5.3 with Bluetooth LE. While it remains unclear whether this indicates support for Bluetooth LE Audio, the inclusion of this technology could lead to improved audio quality and extended battery life. The possibility of Auracast support, a feature that allows for audio sharing with multiple devices, is also generating excitement among tech enthusiasts.

Perhaps the most significant revelation from the FCC filing is the suggestion of a redesigned hinge. This has piqued the interest of many users, as the hinge on the WH-1000XM5 has been criticized for its perceived fragility. Addressing this potential weakness would be a welcome improvement for users seeking enhanced durability.

The filing also confirms that the WH-1000XM6 will utilize the same battery voltage as its predecessor. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t necessarily translate to identical battery life. Different battery configurations can offer varying capacities despite having the same voltage.

While the leaked information provides some clues about the WH-1000XM6, many details remain unknown. Sony has yet to officially announce a release date, but the confidentiality clause in the FCC filing expires in July 2025, suggesting a possible summer launch.

The current model, the WH-1000XM5, while generally well-regarded, hasn’t quite surpassed its predecessor, the WH-1000XM4, in popularity. The XM4’s combination of performance and affordability continues to make it a compelling option for many consumers.

It remains to be seen whether the WH-1000XM6 will introduce enough compelling features to entice users to upgrade. However, the leaked information suggests that Sony is focusing on addressing key areas for improvement, potentially making the WH-1000XM6 a strong contender in the competitive headphone market.
