Dubai is on track to become the first city in the world to offer a commercial flying taxi service, with operations slated to begin in 2026. This ambitious project has received a significant boost with the recent approval of the technical design for the emirate’s first vertiport.
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has granted Skyports Infrastructure the green light to proceed with the development of its Dubai International Vertiport (DXV), located near Dubai International Airport. This approval marks a crucial step in establishing the necessary infrastructure for the upcoming air taxi service.
The DXV is the first facility to receive design approval under the UAE’s newly established Vertiport Regulations, underscoring the nation’s commitment to pioneering aviation technology. The vertiport will serve as a hub for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, offering a new mode of transportation within the city.
This initiative is a collaborative effort between Skyports, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and Joby Aviation. The partners are working to develop a network of vertiports across Dubai, with the DXV being the first of four planned sites.
The GCAA’s approval process involved a rigorous assessment of the vertiport’s design, including its physical characteristics, airspace integration, and safety measures. Skyports demonstrated a comprehensive plan for handling emergencies, including fire suppression strategies for both battery and traditional fuel fires.
