OpenAI’s suite of services, including ChatGPT, Sora, and its developer-facing API, experienced a significant outage on Thursday, December 26th, 2024. The outage, which lasted for over four hours, disrupted access to these popular AI tools, leaving users unable to generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative 1 way, and create AI-generated videos.
The disruption began around 11 a.m. PT, with users encountering error messages when attempting to access ChatGPT and Sora. OpenAI acknowledged the issue on its status page, attributing the outage to a problem with one of its upstream providers.
While the company did not disclose the specific nature of the problem with its upstream provider, it assured users that it was actively working to restore services. By 2:05 p.m. PT, OpenAI reported that ChatGPT had been partially recovered, but users might still experience difficulties loading their chat history. Sora’s functionality was fully restored by 3:16 p.m. PT.
This incident marks the second major outage for OpenAI’s services in December. Earlier this month, on December 12th, a similar outage occurred, lasting approximately six hours. OpenAI attributed that disruption to a malfunctioning telemetry service.
Despite the inconvenience caused by these outages, it’s worth noting that popular services relying on OpenAI’s API, such as Perplexity and Siri’s Apple Intelligence integration, remained unaffected. This suggests that the issue was isolated to OpenAI’s core services rather than its API infrastructure.
