OpenAI introduces ChatGPT Projects for enhanced organization and collaboration

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Projects, a new feature designed to help users better organize their ChatGPT conversations. Announced during the “12 Days of OpenAI” event, ChatGPT Projects allows users to group related chats, files, and custom instructions into dedicated projects, making it easier to manage ongoing work and collaborate with others.

Within a project, users can leverage ChatGPT’s search and canvas functionalities to quickly locate information and visualize ideas. Projects can be created through the ChatGPT web interface or the ChatGPT desktop app for Windows, with support for mobile and macOS platforms planned for the future.

Currently, ChatGPT Projects is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users globally, with Enterprise and Edu users gaining access in January. Free users can also expect access to this feature soon.

One current limitation is that ChatGPT Projects only supports the GPT-4o model. This means that existing chats using the o1 series models will be automatically converted to GPT-4o when organized into projects. This is due to the o1 series’ current lack of support for file uploads and custom instructions. However, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer has confirmed that support for the o1 series will be added in the future.

In related news, OpenAI has also begun rolling out video, screen share, and image upload capabilities within Advanced Voice in the latest ChatGPT mobile apps. This allows for more interactive and dynamic conversations with ChatGPT, enabling users to share visual information and receive contextually relevant responses.
