Google Maps gets a fresh coat of paint with teal update

Google Maps on Android devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S24 and Google Pixel 9 Pro, is getting a visual refresh with a new color scheme. The update, first reported by 9to5Google, swaps the app’s signature blue accents for a darker teal across buttons and other UI elements.

Beyond just a change in hue, text labels are also transitioning from blue to black, a move designed to improve readability in various lighting conditions and enhance focus on the map content itself. The floating action button, used for quick access to features like navigation and location adding, will also lose its blue coloring.

This color update comes roughly a year after Google Maps tweaked the colors of map features like water and roads, a change that initially drew some criticism. Earlier this year, the app received more substantial updates, including a cleaner home screen, new pin colors, and a simplified interface. The shift to teal represents the latest step in Google’s ongoing efforts to refine the Google Maps user experience.
