Twitter introducing a new algorithm for timelines

According to a report from BuzzFeed News,  Twitter is working on rolling out a new algorithm for our timelines in the near future.

Just like Facebook’s News Feed, the new approach taken by Twitter is set to display to users what it thinks is most relevant and worth reading. The shift from reverse chronological order to an algorithmic display could come as early as next week.

Say hello to a brand new Twitter. The company is planning to introduce an algorithmic timeline as soon as next week, BuzzFeed News has learned. The timeline will reorder tweets based on what Twitter’s algorithm thinks people most want to see, a departure from the current feed’s reverse chronological order.

Of course this is still unofficial and it is unclear if this will be the default way of displaying tweets, or if users will be able to sort it based on preference. We’ll keep you updated as we get more info.

Update:

“Twitter is here to stay,” Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said in multiple tweets commenting on the news.

We love the live stream. It’s us. And we’re going to continue to refine it to make Twitter feel more, not less, live! Said Dorsey.

Hello Twitter! Regarding #RIPTwitter: I want you all to know we're always listening. We never planned to reorder timelines next week.

Twitter is live. Twitter is real-time. Twitter is about who & what you follow. And Twitter is here to stay! By becoming more Twitter-y.

It’s most likely user will be able to opt out of the new algorithm if needed.
