Oculus Rift consumer model revealed

Oculus has revealed the final build of their consumer model which will debut in the first quarter of 2016.

The consumer Oculus Rift will come with the headset and an external sensor for positional tracking, a wireless Xbox One controller, and an adjustable slider to reposition the distance between the lenses to accommodate different eyes. The company also mentioned that the resolution is probably not what people expect and that it will be improved in the future.

The virtual reality games can be purchased through a Steam-like platform called ‘Oculus Home’, which can be accessed directly from the VR headset. Oculus Home will also provide social functionality so you can see what your friends are doing.

The company has also revealed the ‘Oculus Touch’, its futuristic controller made of independent smaller controllers for each thumb. Each unit has an analog stick, two buttons, and an analog trigger and hepatic feedback.

The Oculus Touch can recognise hand gestures such as waving, pointing, and giving a thumbs-up. The aim of the controller is to provide the sensation that your virtual hands in the game are your real hands, further immersing you into the VR experience. While current games have full support of the XONE controller, future games may utilise the Oculus Thumb in many different ways.

We want to enable a lot of different types of virtual reality experiences: entirely new, VR experiences; genres of games that have been around for decades that are being brought into VR; hybrid experiences that incorporate the best of traditional input with the best of Virtual reality input. – Palmer Luckey, Oculus Founder
