Ted Lasso has returned after a three-year absence, and viewers apparently did not need much convincing to come back with it. The season 4 premiere has delivered the biggest launch in Apple TV history, according to viewing figures shared by Apple.
The new season generated 296.6 million viewing minutes in the US across August 4 and 5, based on Nielsen data provided by Apple. On August 5 alone, viewers watched more than 200 million minutes, making Ted Lasso the most-streamed program in the country that day.
Apple says those numbers make season 4 the strongest launch the streaming service has recorded so far. While the company has not provided comparable global viewing figures, the US performance offers an early indication that the lengthy break between seasons has not significantly weakened interest in one of its most recognizable shows.
That matters because Ted Lasso occupies an unusual position in Apple’s streaming strategy. Apple TV has built a growing library of acclaimed originals, but few have crossed into mainstream popular culture as effectively as the football comedy starring Jason Sudeikis.
The show’s previous performance helps put the latest numbers into perspective. Ted Lasso season 3 arrived in 2023 and went on to become the year’s most-watched streaming original in the US, according to Nielsen’s annual rankings. That achievement was particularly notable given Apple TV’s smaller overall footprint compared with streaming giants such as Netflix.
Season 3 also appeared, for a time, to be a natural stopping point. The story concluded several major character arcs, and there was considerable uncertainty over whether the series would return in its original form. Instead, Apple eventually brought Ted Lasso back for a fourth season after years of speculation.
Its successful return is useful for Apple beyond the immediate viewing figures. Streaming services increasingly rely on recognizable franchises to retain subscribers in a crowded market where audiences can easily move between platforms. Apple has accumulated critical successes across drama, science fiction and comedy, but Ted Lasso remains one of the relatively few Apple TV properties with established mass-market recognition.
A record premiere also strengthens the argument for keeping the series alive beyond its current run. Apple executives have already indicated an interest in a longer future for Ted Lasso, although early viewing figures alone will not determine how long that future lasts.
There is also a distinction between a huge premiere and sustained engagement. Streaming platforms frequently see strong opening numbers for returning franchises, while the more meaningful test comes in whether audiences continue watching throughout the season.
For now, though, Ted Lasso season 4 has answered one of the biggest questions surrounding its comeback. Three years away did not erase the show’s audience, and Apple now has fresh evidence that its best-known football coach remains one of the strongest players in its streaming lineup.
