More than a decade after Sons of Anarchy ended its seven-season run on FX, several of its most recognizable cast members are preparing to reunite. The catch is that Legends is not a conventional sequel, revival or prequel. Instead, the upcoming FX miniseries will put Charlie Hunnam and his former co-stars into a fictionalized version of their own lives.
Legends is being developed and executive produced by Hunnam, with Jonathan Groff serving as showrunner. The confirmed cast includes Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi.
Rather than bringing back Jax Teller, Clay Morrow, Gemma, Tara or the other familiar characters from Sons of Anarchy, the actors will play versions of themselves. The story begins with the cast reuniting at a fan convention years after the original series ended. That reunion then takes a darker turn when the boundary between performance and reality begins to break down, leaving the group facing a threat outside the world of television.
That meta premise gives Legends a very different relationship with Sons of Anarchy than Mayans M.C., the franchise’s earlier spin-off. Mayans expanded the same fictional universe and shared connections with SAMCRO. Legends appears more interested in the legacy of the original show, its actors and its fandom than in extending established continuity.
That distinction is particularly important given how Sons of Anarchy ended. Many of the characters played by the returning actors did not survive the series, including Jax, Clay, Gemma, Tara, Bobby and Juice. A straightforward continuation built around the same ensemble would therefore have required some creative contortions. By casting the actors as themselves, Legends can reunite much of the group without undoing the original series’ ending.
Series creator Kurt Sutter is not involved with the new production. However, he has publicly supported the project, saying Hunnam approached him beforehand and received his blessing. That separation also makes sense creatively. Legends is tied to Sons of Anarchy through its cast and cultural footprint rather than through Sutter’s original characters or mythology.
There is still plenty that remains unclear, including how heavily the series will lean into thriller elements, how self-aware its comedy or drama might become, and whether other familiar cast members will join the ensemble. Ryan Hurst and David Labrava, among others, have not been announced so far.
For fans expecting Sons of Anarchy season eight, Legends is clearly something else. But its unusual setup may actually give the reunion more room to work, allowing the cast to revisit the show’s legacy without pretending the original story never reached its conclusion.
