New Robocop series greenlit for Prime Video run

Amazon MGM Studios has greenlit an eight-episode Robocop series for Prime Video, bringing the cyborg cop back to screens nearly four decades after the original film. Original co-creator Ed Neumeier will executive produce, while Peter O Peter Ocko of Lodge 49 and Pushing Daisies steps in as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett join as executive producers, with Wan expected to direct key episodes. Filming is slated to begin in 2027. No release date has been set.

The premise stays close to the franchise’s roots: a massive tech conglomerate pushes a city to install a powerful robot on its police force, one carrying the consciousness of a fallen officer. Producers frame the story around unchecked corporate power and the dangers of rushing technology into public service, themes that defined Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original. That film sliced through privatization, gentrification, and corporate greed with brutal satire and hyper-violence, earning its place among the sharpest science-fiction action movies of its era. Two sequels, an animated series, live-action shows, comics, and games followed. The 2014 remake with Joel Kinnaman drew mixed reactions, and Neill Blomkamp’s later attempt to revive Peter Weller’s Alex Murphy never left development.

Early details suggest the new series will center on a soldier-turned-cyborg named Mark Kyle rather than a direct reboot of Murphy. That choice signals an effort to build something fresh while still nodding to the source. Yet the irony sits thick. A story skewering giant tech companies and their influence over civic life will stream on a platform owned by one of the largest tech conglomerates on the planet. Whether Ocko and company can aim their satire inward, or at least keep the critique honest, will determine if this version carries the original’s bite or softens into slick corporate entertainment.

Robocop has always thrived when it refused to flinch. The 1987 film worked because it treated its dystopia as both thrilling and grotesque, never letting the action drown the commentary. Later entries often lost that balance, chasing bigger set pieces or safer tones. A prestige streaming series offers room for the kind of sharp, episodic storytelling the premise deserves, especially with Ocko’s track record for distinctive, character-driven work. Still, the long gap since the last meaningful entry, combined with the usual reboot caution that sanitizes edge for broader appeal, leaves room for skepticism. The tools are in place. The question is whether anyone will let the robot keep its teeth.
