Lupin Part 4 trailer gives Assane his most dangerous problem yet

Netflix has released the official trailer for Lupin Part 4, setting up another round of elaborate thefts, disguises and misdirection when the French crime series returns on October 23.

Omar Sy is back as gentleman thief Assane Diop, although the new footage immediately complicates his position. Assane begins Part 4 behind bars, while the declaration that “We have a new Lupin” suggests someone else has started operating under the identity he made famous. That is particularly inconvenient when a mysterious message bearing Lupin’s name announces plans to target several museums simultaneously.

The new season takes place four years after the events of Part 3. Assane intends to finish serving his sentence and honour a promise to his son by reuniting with his family in Senegal. Unsurprisingly for a series built around increasingly elaborate complications, his attempt at a more straightforward future does not last long.

Despite increased security, the threatened museum robberies apparently take place, leaving Assane trying to prove he is not responsible. The situation becomes considerably worse when footage appears to place him at one of the crime scenes. Captain Belkacem is also seriously injured during one of the robberies, raising the stakes beyond the cat-and-mouse games that have traditionally driven the series.

The impostor angle gives Part 4 a useful way to challenge Assane without simply constructing another bigger heist. Lupin has always treated identity as one of its most effective weapons, with Assane using costumes, manipulation and other people’s assumptions to stay ahead. Turning that reputation against him could make anonymity a liability rather than an advantage.

Sy is joined by returning cast members including Ludivine Sagnier, Antoine Gouy, Soufiane Guerrab, Shirine Boutella, Théo Christine and Laïka Blanc-Francard. George Kay created Lupin with François Uzan, while Edouard Salier, Everardo Gout and Hugo Gélin direct Part 4. The season consists of eight episodes, with Netflix releasing all of them on October 23.

Four parts in, Lupin no longer needs to establish Assane as an exceptionally capable thief. The more interesting challenge is finding credible ways to put someone who usually controls the trick at a disadvantage. Part 4 appears ready to do exactly that by giving Assane an opponent who can steal more than valuables — they can steal Lupin himself.
