Slow Horses season 6 first look: on the run in high-stakes revenge

Apple TV has released the first promotional images for season six of its spy drama Slow Horses, offering a glimpse into the next chapter of the series based on Mick Herron’s Slough House novels. The six-episode run, drawn from the books Joe Country and Slough House, is set to premiere globally on September 16, 2026, with weekly episodes following through October 21. Sir Gary Oldman returns as Jackson Lamb, the sharp yet abrasive head of a misfit MI5 team relegated to the unglamorous backwater known as Slough House.

The show has carved a niche as a sardonic take on the intelligence world, tracking agents whose blunders have landed them in this dead-end department. Rather than sleek gadgetry or flawless operatives, Slow Horses leans into the messiness of bureaucracy, personal failings, and the often absurd realities of espionage. Oldman’s Lamb embodies this with a blend of cunning and crankiness, a character who stands out amid the ensemble’s flawed dynamics. Season six finds the group on the run, entangled in a dangerous cycle of retaliation sparked by Diana Taverner, escalating the stakes beyond their usual sidelined existence.

The cast remains a strength, featuring Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Rosalind Eleazar, Joanna Scanlan, Samuel West, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke, Jonathan Pryce, and Hugo Weaving. Newcomer Lenny Rush joins the lineup. This continuity has helped the series maintain a consistent tone across its run, adapting Herron’s novels—which have earned literary praise including the CWA Gold Dagger—into television that favors character-driven tension over high-octane spectacle. Earlier seasons earned strong critical marks, with several achieving high Rotten Tomatoes scores, though the show’s appeal has always rested more on dry wit and institutional satire than broad blockbuster thrills.

Production-wise, See-Saw Films continues behind the scenes, with Gaby Chiappe handling adaptation for this season and Adam Randall directing. The first five seasons remain available to stream, giving viewers a chance to catch up on the accumulating layers of intrigue and interpersonal friction that define the series. In a crowded field of espionage stories, Slow Horses distinguishes itself by embracing the unglamorous side of the trade—office politics, lingering resentments, and the quiet competence that emerges from dysfunction.

While the franchise has built a loyal following through its refusal to romanticize the intelligence community, the upcoming season’s focus on revenge and pursuit suggests a shift toward more propulsive plotting. Whether this maintains the balance that made prior installments compelling or tips toward conventional thriller territory remains to be seen. Still, for those drawn to stories where spies are as human and error-prone as the rest of us, it holds promise as another layered entry in a reliably offbeat saga.
