Disney+ just added The Mandalorian and Grogu after its theatrical run

The Mandalorian and Grogu is now streaming on Disney+, bringing Din Djarin and Grogu back to the platform where their Star Wars story first became a global hit.

The film arrived on Disney+ on September 2, roughly three months after opening in cinemas on May 22. That gives subscribers their first opportunity to watch the latest big-screen Star Wars release as part of a standard Disney+ subscription, following earlier digital purchase and physical 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD releases.

For Disney, the streaming launch closes the loop on an unusual experiment for one of its most successful television franchises. The Mandalorian helped establish Disney+ as a major streaming destination when it debuted in 2019, with Grogu becoming one of the most recognisable characters created during the modern Star Wars era. Moving those characters into cinemas was therefore less about introducing audiences to something new and more about testing whether streaming popularity could translate into theatrical demand.

The results were respectable without approaching the franchise’s previous box-office heights. The Mandalorian and Grogu earned around $345 million globally after its theatrical release, according to the supplied figures. That puts it well below Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which crossed the $1 billion mark during its theatrical run.

That gap makes the Disney+ release particularly interesting. The Mandalorian was designed around episodic television, and a significant portion of its audience already associates Din Djarin and Grogu with watching Star Wars at home. The film’s arrival on streaming could therefore give it a second life among viewers who skipped cinemas but remain invested in the characters.

Reception to the movie was mixed to broadly positive, with much of the discussion focusing on whether the jump from television to film justified itself creatively. The project leaned heavily on Grogu’s appeal and the familiarity of The Mandalorian rather than attempting to reset Star Wars for an entirely new audience. That approach may have limited its theatrical scale, but it also makes the film a natural fit for Disney+.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is available to stream on Disney+ now. It can also still be purchased digitally through platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango, while physical editions remain available for viewers who prefer 4K Ultra HD or Blu-ray.

For Star Wars fans who waited for streaming, this is arguably where the film was always destined to feel most at home. The bigger question is whether Disney sees its theatrical performance as strong enough to keep pushing streaming-born Star Wars characters onto cinema screens.
