The Battle of Tumbleton was one of the biggest set pieces in House of the Dragon Season 3, and a new behind-the-scenes feature shows just how carefully the production team had to engineer the chaos.
The roughly 20-minute mini-documentary brings together several of the people responsible for staging the sequence, including showrunner Ryan Condal, episode director Andrij Parekh and director of photography Vanja Černjul. Rather than treating the battle as something that could be solved later with visual effects, the team appears to have mapped out much of the action well before cameras rolled.
One of the more revealing details is the use of a physical scale model of Tumbleton, complete with miniature figures. Černjul explains that the model helped the filmmakers plan movement, camera positions and the geography of the battle before production began. For a sequence involving large numbers of performers, practical destruction, dragons and digital extensions, that kind of preparation is less glamorous than the finished result but probably just as important.
