Facebook launches ThreatExchange, a cyber defense coalition

Facebook has officially launched ThreatExchange, a new cyber defence coalition in a bid to combat hackers, botnets and other cyber security threats. ThreatExchange is an API-based platform for companies to share security information with each other and make the internet safer.

The partnership inlcudes companies like Pinterest, Tumblr, Twitter, Yahoo, Bitly and Dropbox who joined the beta program. ThreatExchange uses Facebook’s internal threat system called ThreatData.

Our goal is that organizations anywhere will be able to use ThreatExchange to share threat information more easily, learn from each other’s discoveries, and make their own systems safer. That’s the beauty of working together on security. When one company gets stronger, so do the rest of us, said Facebook manager of threat and infrastructure, Mark Hammell.

Facebook also said that it  has opened registration to other companies interested in joining the platform. Joining forms can be filled here.

The idea behind the new framework came to life when Facebook, along with other big companies suffered an attack last year.
