Apple’s mysterious iPhone 18 Pro teaser may reveal its biggest camera upgrade

Apple is hours away from its September hardware event, but a cryptic teaser from newly appointed CEO John Ternus may have already offered a clue about one of the iPhone 18 Pro’s most interesting upgrades.

The short video shows a beam of light hitting the edge of what appears to be an iPhone, while a hexagonal shape expands and contracts. Apple has not explained what the animation represents, leaving plenty of room for pre-event interpretation. The obvious connection, however, is the camera — specifically persistent reports that the iPhone 18 Pro could introduce a variable aperture system for its main 48-megapixel Fusion camera.

If that interpretation is correct, Apple would be adding another layer of physical camera control to a smartphone photography system that has increasingly relied on computational processing.

A variable aperture changes how much light passes through the lens before reaching the camera sensor. It can also influence depth of field, potentially giving photographers more control over how a subject is separated from its background. Dedicated cameras have used adjustable apertures forever, but fitting comparable mechanisms into the tightly packed dimensions of a smartphone is considerably more complicated.

There is also reason to keep expectations measured. Smartphone sensors and lenses remain much smaller than those found in interchangeable-lens cameras, meaning the practical difference between aperture settings may not be as dramatic as the terminology suggests. Apple would need to demonstrate where the feature produces noticeably better photographs rather than simply providing another specification for the iPhone 18 Pro camera sheet.

The timing of the teaser makes the camera theory difficult to ignore, although nothing in the clip explicitly confirms it. Apple’s event begins September 9 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, when the company is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside a considerably bigger addition to the lineup: its first foldable iPhone, reportedly called the iPhone Duo.

That foldable could easily become the headline product of the event, potentially leaving the conventional Pro models fighting harder for attention. A mechanical camera upgrade would therefore make sense as one way of differentiating the iPhone 18 Pro beyond the usual annual improvements.

The teaser is notable for another reason. This is one of the first major Apple product launches under Ternus as CEO. He took over from Tim Cook on September 1, with Cook moving into the executive chairman role. Ternus is hardly new to Apple hardware: he joined the company in 2001 and eventually became senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021.

Whether the expanding hexagon really is an aperture will be answered shortly. If it is, the more important question will be whether Apple has turned variable aperture into a genuinely useful photographic tool — or another camera feature most iPhone owners rarely think about.
