X turns usernames into luxury rentals with its new handle marketplace

X has officially turned usernames into high-priced collectibles — with strings attached. The platform just launched its new Handle Marketplace, a feature allowing Premium Plus and Premium Business subscribers to buy inactive or “rare” usernames. But the catch is as sharp as the price tag: stop paying your subscription, and you lose the name.

The marketplace splits handles into two tiers. “Priority handles” come included for paying subscribers and cover basic or multi-word names. “Rare handles,” however, are sold at prices starting around $2,500 and, according to X, can climb “well into seven figures.” Once a user secures one, their old handle is frozen, and if they ever downgrade or cancel their Premium plan, the handle gets revoked — instantly.

In essence, X has turned digital identity into a rental model. Unlike a traditional marketplace where ownership transfers after payment, this system operates like leasing luxury vanity plates — as long as you keep paying, you get to keep showing off.

At the moment, the Handle Marketplace is limited to Premium Business users, though X plans to expand access later. The move fits neatly into CEO Elon Musk’s broader push to monetize every corner of the platform, from ad-free tiers to boosted replies. It’s also a sharp contrast to how other platforms handle inactive usernames. Instagram, Threads, and TikTok allow trademark claims or reports for impersonation but stop short of letting users buy handles outright.

For brands and celebrities, the idea of finally reclaiming a clean, inactive username might be tempting. But for everyone else, it’s another pay-to-play feature wrapped in exclusivity. The policy also raises questions about what “ownership” means in X’s new economy — where even a username isn’t really yours, just borrowed for as long as you’re willing to foot the bill.

In a social media landscape already defined by subscriptions and status tiers, X’s marketplace takes digital clout to a new level: you can finally buy that dream handle — but don’t stop paying, or it vanishes faster than a deleted tweet.
