WhatsApp is giving music a little more breathing room in Status updates, doubling the maximum length of song clips from 15 seconds to 30 seconds. The change is beginning to reach users on both iOS and Android, although it is not yet available to everyone.
The update applies when adding music to WhatsApp Status, the messaging platform’s temporary sharing feature that broadly serves the same purpose as Stories on other social networks. Users can attach up to 30 seconds of a song to a photo or publish the selected music clip directly as a Status update.
A new duration picker appears inside the music editor after selecting a track. Thirty seconds is the maximum rather than a requirement, so users can still choose shorter sections when that makes more sense for the post.
It’s a small change, but one that makes WhatsApp’s relatively recent push into music sharing considerably more useful. Fifteen seconds can work for a chorus, hook or quick reaction, but doubling that allowance provides enough time for a more substantial section of a song without turning Status into a full music-streaming feature.
The feature is being enabled through a server-side rollout, meaning simply installing the latest version of WhatsApp won’t necessarily make the 30-second option appear immediately. Some users on both major mobile platforms are already seeing it, while WhatsApp version 26.35.72 has been identified as compatible on iOS.
That staggered availability is typical of WhatsApp. The company frequently introduces features gradually, allowing functionality to appear for different groups of users without requiring another App Store or Google Play release. If your Status music editor is still capped at 15 seconds, there may therefore be little to do besides keeping WhatsApp updated and waiting for the account-side switch.
The change also reflects how WhatsApp has steadily expanded Status beyond its messaging roots. Temporary posts increasingly borrow the creative tools people expect from social platforms, including photos, video and music. Extending song clips to 30 seconds makes Status a stronger alternative for users who already spend most of their communication time inside WhatsApp rather than jumping to a separate social app.
For Meta, that distinction is useful. WhatsApp’s enormous messaging audience gives the company an opportunity to encourage more lightweight social sharing without asking users to build another follower network from scratch.
Nobody is going to rethink how they use WhatsApp because an extra 15 seconds of music suddenly became available. But small quality-of-life changes like this gradually make Status more capable, and potentially give users fewer reasons to leave WhatsApp when they simply want to share the song currently stuck in their head.
