The new Disney+ app is live in the UAE, and you must switch

Disney+ subscribers in the UAE will need to download a new app. The Disney+ app that went live on 8 October replaces the version people have used since the service arrived in the region in mid-2022, and existing customers are being prompted to install it and sign in with their current credentials. The redesign changes how the service looks and works, though it does not appear to change what subscribers pay or, for the most part, what they can watch.

The most practical change is travel. Subscribers can now keep streaming in supported markets across Europe, the United States and elsewhere. Streaming services have long been hemmed in by regional licensing, and anyone who has opened a familiar app abroad only to find half their watchlist missing will welcome the change. Disney has not published a full list of supported countries, though, or said whether the catalogue stays the same once you cross a border, so the feature’s real scope is unclear for now.

Families get a more visible upgrade in Junior Mode, a separate profile type with a simpler interface and child-appropriate content. It works alongside existing tools such as PIN-locked profiles, adjustable content ratings and alerts when profile settings change. None of this is novel; Netflix and others have offered kids’ profiles for years. But a cleaner, dedicated space for younger viewers fixes a common complaint about Disney+, where Pixar shorts and FX dramas used to share the same shelves.

Elsewhere, Disney promises a dynamic homepage, simpler navigation and recommendations based on both personal viewing habits and what is trending locally. The app supports up to 25 audio and subtitle languages, which matters in a country as linguistically mixed as the UAE. Disney also says the redesign makes it easier to find content across Disney+, Hulu and ESPN, though it has not said how much ESPN programming is actually available to UAE subscribers.

On the content side, the timing is helpful. The Simpsons season 38, Grey’s Anatomy season 23 and The Kardashians season 8 sit alongside Marvel’s upcoming VisionQuest and the live-action Moana, which is due later this autumn. International titles get more attention than before: Turkish series Halef is on the way, the romantic comedy Merry Berry Love is streaming now, and the Korean drama The Remarried Empress arrives on 4 November.

Pricing still starts at AED 49.99 per month. That leaves Disney+ competing on convenience rather than cost in a crowded regional market that includes Netflix, Shahid and OSN+. A more polished app helps, but subscribers will judge the relaunch less on its features than on whether the content keeps coming.
