Spotify surpasses 300 million subscribers

Spotify has crossed a major milestone, surpassing 300 million paid subscribers for the first time as the music streaming giant continues to grow despite recent price increases across several markets.

The company reported 300 million-plus Premium subscribers during its second-quarter results, alongside 777 million monthly active users, representing a 12% year-over-year increase. Subscriber growth rose 9% compared with the same period last year, suggesting demand for the service has remained resilient even as subscription costs have climbed in multiple regions.

Quarterly revenue reached €4.8 billion (approximately $5.5 billion), an increase of 14% year over year, reinforcing Spotify’s position as the world’s largest subscription-based music streaming platform.

The latest figures arrive as Spotify continues expanding beyond music. Over the past year, the company has steadily added new content categories and services, including fitness programming, magazine narrations, integrated concert ticket purchasing and physical book sales. The strategy reflects a broader effort to position Spotify as a comprehensive audio and media platform rather than solely a music streaming service.

Artificial intelligence has also become a central part of Spotify’s product roadmap. Recent launches include AI-powered podcast tools capable of generating summaries, question-and-answer features and personalised podcast experiences assembled from multiple content sources. The company has also partnered with ElevenLabs to simplify audiobook production and introduced experimental desktop software designed to help users organise and explore information using generative AI.

More recently, Spotify rolled out a conversational AI assistant that enables users to discover music, podcasts and other content through natural language prompts instead of relying exclusively on traditional search and recommendations.

The company’s AI ambitions have not been without controversy. Spotify has faced increasing criticism over the growing presence of AI-generated music on its platform, raising concerns among artists and listeners about authenticity and discoverability. In response, the company has introduced artist verification measures and optional labels identifying AI-generated tracks, although broader industry challenges around reliably detecting synthetic music remain unresolved.

Despite those debates, Spotify’s latest subscriber numbers suggest consumer adoption has continued largely unaffected. The platform’s ability to maintain strong paid growth after multiple pricing adjustments may also signal that users increasingly view music streaming as an essential subscription, particularly as Spotify continues adding new features and content beyond its core catalogue.

Competition across the streaming market remains intense, with rivals including Apple Music, Amazon Music and YouTube Music continuing to invest heavily in exclusive content, recommendation technology and AI-powered experiences. Spotify’s latest results indicate that scale, product diversification and continued investment in personalised features remain key components of its strategy to stay ahead in an increasingly crowded market.
