Reddit explores Face ID and passkeys to confirm real users

Reddit is preparing to introduce new verification measures aimed at limiting bot activity, as the platform continues to deal with a rise in automated and AI-assisted accounts. The company says the approach will focus on confirming whether an account is operated by a real person, rather than requiring full identity verification.

In a recent update, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman outlined a system that will flag accounts showing signs of unusual or automated behavior. These accounts may be asked to “verify humanness” through additional checks. According to the company, this will apply only in limited cases, rather than across the entire user base.

The verification process will rely on on-device tools such as passkeys and facial recognition methods like Face ID. These checks are designed to confirm that a real person is behind an account without linking that activity to broader identity data. Reddit is also considering other verification frameworks, including systems like World ID, though no firm commitment has been made.

If an account fails to complete the verification process, it could face restrictions on the platform. At the same time, Reddit is trying to maintain a balance between reducing spam and preserving the anonymity that has long been part of its appeal. The company has emphasized that it is not aiming to verify users’ identities, but rather to ensure that accounts are not fully automated.

Alongside these measures, Reddit will introduce clearer labeling for bots that are allowed on the platform. Approved automated accounts will receive an “[APP]” tag, while reporting tools for suspicious or harmful bots are expected to become more accessible to users.

The move comes as online platforms face increasing pressure to manage bot-driven content, particularly as AI tools make it easier to generate large volumes of posts. Reddit’s approach suggests a more targeted strategy, focusing on behavior patterns rather than broad verification requirements.

There are also regulatory considerations shaping these changes. Reddit, like other platforms, is exploring ways to comply with emerging age verification laws while attempting to avoid collecting excessive personal data. How these systems are implemented will likely determine whether the company can maintain user trust while addressing safety concerns.

Notably, Reddit does not plan to restrict AI-generated content created by human users. The current focus remains on distinguishing between automated accounts and those operated by real individuals, even if those individuals rely on AI tools to generate posts.

RedditThis shift reflects a wider challenge across social platforms: managing the growing presence of automation without undermining user privacy or altering the core experience. Reddit’s verification model is still evolving, and its effectiveness will depend on how accurately it can identify problematic behavior without affecting legitimate users.
