Nothing has pushed back against reports claiming it plans to exit a dozen markets amid falling global shipments, confirming instead that it is reorganizing teams and cutting some roles while dismissing the scale of the rumored exits as exaggerated. Cofounder Akis Evangelidis described the moves as preparation for the next stage of growth, including the creation of dedicated business units such as an AI-native one and the consolidation of individual country operations into regional hubs for greater efficiency. He stressed that the company is not shutting down in any markets and that the reported layoff figures are overstated, though he stopped short of providing precise numbers, citing regulatory rules and ongoing local consultations.
The same statement pushed back on suggestions that the Phone 4B had underperformed. Evangelidis said the device sold 29,537 units on its first day, a figure he presented as a record in its price segment. Whether that number represents meaningful share or simply strong opening demand in a crowded midrange field remains open to independent verification, as first-day tallies have long been a favored metric in smartphone launches. The broader context is less upbeat. Rising component costs continue to pressure the midrange segment where Nothing has built its presence. Memory prices in particular have climbed sharply. CEO Carl Pei noted last month that the cost of memory for the earlier Phone 4A had doubled since launch, to the point that RAM alone can represent half the bill of materials for a new handset. Those same pressures led Nothing to shelve any new CMF-branded phone for the current year.
Supply-chain strain is not unique to Nothing. The midrange Android market has grown more unforgiving as memory and other components tighten, forcing brands to choose between absorbing higher costs, raising prices, or delaying products. Consolidating country operations into regional hubs is a familiar response among smaller and mid-sized manufacturers seeking to trim overhead while keeping a presence in key territories. It rarely signals outright retreat, but it does reflect a more cautious approach to global expansion at a time when volume growth is harder to sustain.
The company framed the internal changes as necessary for efficiency and for building out AI-related capabilities, language that has become standard across the industry as every manufacturer races to position its software and hardware for generative features. Staff affected by the reorganization face the usual uncertainty that accompanies such shifts. Evangelidis acknowledged that decisions affecting livelihoods are not taken lightly, yet the absence of concrete figures leaves the true scope of the cuts unclear.
