Meta is taking another shot at making dedicated AI hardware feel useful, and this time it doesn’t involve wearing a computer on your face. The company has unveiled the Muse Charm, a pocket-sized device built specifically around Muse, its AI assistant, with a launch planned before the December holidays.
The Muse Charm is essentially an alternative for anyone interested in Meta’s AI ecosystem but not particularly interested in smart glasses. It features a roughly 2-inch OLED display running a new operating system, with a customizable Muse avatar appearing on screen. Users can change the avatar’s appearance, clothing and voice, giving the device a slightly more playful personality than the increasingly familiar AI-in-a-box approach.
And playful is definitely the theme here. The semi-transparent design exposes some of the circuitry underneath and gives the Muse Charm a distinctly retro electronic-pet look. It can be carried in a pocket, attached to a bag or keychain with a lanyard, or worn using a wristband. Two Muse Charm devices can even recognize and interact with one another when their owners are nearby, which could either become a genuinely interesting social feature or something everyone tries once and immediately forgets about.
There’s considerably more hardware packed inside than the tiny design suggests. The Charm includes 5G connectivity, a fingerprint sensor, front and rear cameras, a speaker, microphone and USB-C charging. Those cameras aren’t simply there for photography: they can feed visual information to Muse for analysis, while captured photos and videos can also be viewed directly on the device. It supports music and video playback too. Despite some smartphone-like hardware, however, it isn’t designed to replace your phone and cannot make conventional phone or video calls.
Meta is expanding Muse beyond the Charm at the same time. The AI assistant is getting customizable avatars for real-time video conversations and its own email address, allowing the agent to communicate and perform tasks more independently.
The biggest unanswered question is price. Meta hasn’t announced an official figure yet, although the device is reportedly expected to land somewhere around smartwatch territory. The company also hasn’t finalized how carrier connectivity will work.
Dedicated AI gadgets have had a difficult time proving why they deserve space alongside the smartphone. The Muse Charm’s advantage may be that Meta isn’t pretending otherwise: it’s small, intentionally limited and focused heavily on giving Muse a physical home. Whether that makes it genuinely useful or simply another gadget hanging from your keychain will depend heavily on what Muse can actually do when the Charm arrives.
