Meta is expanding its Muse AI agent beyond phones and the web with a dedicated Mac app capable of working across local files and several of macOS’s everyday applications. The move gives Muse considerably more access to a user’s digital life — and potentially makes it far more useful than another chatbot sitting inside a browser tab.
Muse for Mac can interact with information from apps including Mail, Messages, Calendar and Notes, while also working with files stored on the computer. That means users can give the agent tasks that require pulling information from several places rather than manually feeding documents or copying text into a chat window.
Meta’s examples include asking Muse to organise folders, complete forms using information stored in existing files or assemble an end-of-day summary from emails, messages and notes. Those are relatively mundane jobs, but they’re also exactly the sort of repetitive computer work that AI agents are increasingly being built to eliminate.
The important difference between Muse and conventional conversational AI is action. Instead of simply explaining how to complete something, Meta wants the agent to perform parts of the task itself.
That inevitably creates a permissions problem. An assistant capable of reading messages, examining documents and navigating personal information needs significantly more trust than a chatbot answering questions. Meta says users remain in control of what Muse can access, including whether the application receives macOS Full Disk Access, with permissions adjustable through Settings.
There are also limits on autonomous actions. Muse is designed to request confirmation before performing sensitive operations such as deleting files or sending messages. That safeguard matters because giving AI agents greater control of desktop environments also increases the consequences when they misunderstand instructions or make mistakes.
The Mac release arrives shortly after Muse launched with iOS, Android and web versions, suggesting Meta is moving quickly to establish the agent as something that follows users across devices rather than remaining tied to a single interface.
It also reflects the industry’s wider shift from chatbots toward computer-using agents. The next battleground for consumer AI isn’t simply which model gives the smartest answer; it’s which assistant can safely understand the context scattered across applications and actually finish useful work.
Muse’s Mac app pushes Meta further into that race. Whether users are comfortable granting an AI assistant enough access to make those capabilities genuinely useful may prove just as important as what the agent can technically accomplish.
