iPhone Duo App Store submissions are now open

Apple is now accepting App Store submissions for apps built specifically for the iPhone Duo, less than three weeks before its first foldable iPhone goes on sale on Friday, October 23. The timing gives developers a short window to get their apps ready, and how many of them make it in time will strongly shape what early owners think of the device.

The technical rule is simple. Every existing iPhone app will run on the Duo without changes. However, only apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later can resize dynamically to fill the large inner display. Apps that haven’t been updated will appear with black borders around them, in a letterboxed view. Apple has released Xcode 27.1 and posted guidance on preparing apps for the new form factor.

This is the oldest problem in foldable phones, and Apple has not escaped it. Samsung has been selling Galaxy Z Fold devices since 2019, and for years the most common complaint was apps that ignored the larger screen, stretched awkwardly or sat in a box in the middle of the display. Google spent several Android releases pushing developers toward responsive layouts, with mixed results. Apple has its own version of this history too. iPhone apps running on the iPad have often looked like a small phone floating on a tablet, years after the iPad’s launch.

Apple has two things working for it. Its developer base usually adopts new hardware features quickly, especially when Apple highlights optimised apps on the App Store. Many apps already support iPad layouts and size classes, which should make adapting to the Duo’s inner screen easier than starting from scratch. Apple also said at the device’s September unveiling that both displays share the same aspect ratio, so the jump between closed and open states may be easier for developers than on some Android designs.

Still, apps that support resizing are not the same as apps that make good use of a bigger screen. Filling the display is the minimum. Proper multi-column layouts, useful side panels and sensible use of the extra space take real design work, and few developers will finish that by launch day.

For buyers, the first weeks will show how the Duo actually works day to day. Apple’s own apps and big names with dedicated iOS teams will probably be ready. The bigger unknown is the long tail of banking, airline, government and utility apps. If those stay letterboxed for months, the Duo’s large screen will feel underused, much as early iPads did when they first launched.
