Apple has released the fifth developer betas of its next major software updates, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS 27. The new builds arrive after an unusually long three-week gap and signal the start of the final stretch before the expected public releases in September.
For iPhone users, iOS 27 beta 5 is the most significant part of the rollout. Apple is using this year’s update to push a substantially expanded version of Siri and Apple Intelligence, while also promising improvements to everyday performance. At this stage of testing, however, the priority is increasingly likely to shift from adding features to making everything already announced work reliably.
The rebuilt Siri is central to Apple’s iOS 27 strategy. Apple says the assistant will offer more natural conversations, better understanding of personal context and what’s displayed on screen, broader knowledge, and the ability to perform more actions inside apps. Siri is also getting a redesigned interface connected to the Dynamic Island and a dedicated app where users can revisit conversations across Apple devices.
Visual Intelligence is becoming more closely integrated with Siri as well, including through the Camera app. Apple Intelligence features are also spreading into Photos, Safari, Passwords, Mail, Messages, Phone, Shortcuts and Home. Depending on the task, Apple’s AI processing can take place directly on the device or use its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.
That makes iOS 27 an important test of Apple’s broader AI ambitions. The company is no longer dealing with a handful of isolated intelligence features; it is trying to make AI part of routine interactions across the operating system. Whether those features are fast, accurate and dependable in daily use will matter more than the length of the feature list.
There are plenty of conventional iPhone changes too. Apple has continued refining the Liquid Glass interface introduced previously, including a transparency control for adjusting the appearance of system elements. The company is also targeting faster app launches, Photos loading, AirDrop transfers and transitions between Wi-Fi and cellular networks, alongside improved Camera performance in Low Power Mode.
Other additions include keyword and star-rating tools in Photos, customizable slideshows, continuous sending in Messages, Dual Capture for FaceTime, custom EQ settings for AirPods, additional recovery options, quicker Apple Pay card switching and AI-generated wallpapers.
Meanwhile, iPadOS 27 beta 5, watchOS 27 beta 5, tvOS 27 beta 5 and visionOS 27 beta 5 are moving through the same late-summer development cycle. With the final releases approaching, subsequent betas are likely to arrive more frequently while concentrating on bugs, battery life, compatibility and performance rather than major new functionality.
The current builds are available to developers, with corresponding public betas expected to follow if Apple maintains its usual testing schedule. Beta software still carries the usual risks, including crashes, reduced battery life and apps that may not behave correctly, making installation on a primary device harder to recommend.
Apple has packed iOS 27 with ambitious AI features, but beta 5 marks the point where ambition needs to become dependable software. The remaining weeks before launch will show whether the new Siri and wider Apple Intelligence platform are polished enough to make that transition.
