HONOR Robot Phone brings ARRI cinema tech to a robotic flagship

HONOR has used LEAP 2026 to unveil one of the stranger smartphone concepts to reach flagship hardware: the HONOR Robot Phone, a device that physically moves its camera rather than relying entirely on conventional optical and electronic stabilization. The headline feature is an integrated motorised gimbal that can pan, tilt and reposition the camera, effectively giving the phone a small robotic camera arm.

HONOR describes the mechanism as a 4-DoF Titanium Agile Gimbal built from more than 100 components. Its 2.6g titanium motor can move at up to 360 degrees per second, while a separate flip motor deploys and positions the camera assembly. HONOR claims it has made the mechanism 65% smaller than mainstream standalone gimbals while improving structural strength by 200%, although those figures will need independent testing to put them into meaningful context.

The more interesting question is what that movement enables. Instead of simply compensating for shaky hands, the Robot Phone can actively follow subjects and perform programmed camera movements. Modes include Tilt Lock, FPV, vertical FPV and AI SpinShot, while subject tracking, voice-source localisation and gesture controls allow the camera to reposition itself without someone manually operating it. For solo creators, video calls and livestreams, that could be considerably more useful than another incremental increase in camera resolution.

HONOR is also leaning heavily into professional video. Its new imaging partnership with cinema-camera manufacturer ARRI brings selected elements of ARRI’s image science and production workflow to the phone. The 200MP main camera uses a 1/1.28-inch sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and supports 10-bit ARRI LogC3 recording. It is joined by a 200MP periscope telephoto camera with 2.7x optical zoom and a 50MP, 122-degree ultrawide.

The pipeline combines ARRI LogC3, Wide Gamut 3 and ARRI Looks with HONOR’s H1 imaging chip. HONOR claims AI processing can deliver up to 14 stops of dynamic range, while footage can be moved into software such as DaVinci Resolve and graded using ARRI LUTs. That makes the Robot Phone potentially more interesting to serious mobile filmmakers than cinematic filters alone, though real-world image quality will determine how useful the workflow actually is.

MagicOS extends the robotic hardware beyond filming through YOYO Robot Mode, which combines visual and audio perception with physical camera movement. HONOR is also opening the system to developers through Agent Skills, potentially allowing third-party applications to use the phone’s gimbal and sensing capabilities.

The remaining specifications are suitably flagship-level. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 powers the device, alongside a 7,060mAh silicon-carbon battery, 120W wired and 50W wireless charging. There’s also a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED display with a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate and claimed 6,800-nit peak brightness.

The Robot Phone is ultimately a more ambitious experiment than simply adding another camera sensor. Integrating moving mechanical hardware into a device routinely dropped, pocketed and exposed to dust also creates obvious durability challenges. If HONOR can solve those while making autonomous camera movement genuinely useful, robotic hardware could become a surprisingly practical new direction for smartphones rather than another short-lived industry novelty.
