Meta is closing a particularly obvious privacy loophole in its smart glasses, with a software update designed to stop the camera whenever someone covers the device’s recording indicator light.
The change addresses a workaround that undermined one of the main safeguards built into Meta’s camera-equipped glasses. The LED is supposed to tell people nearby when the wearer is taking a photo or recording video, but the existing protection only checked whether that light was obstructed when recording began. That meant someone could start recording normally and then cover the LED while the camera continued operating.
Meta VP of AR Alex Himel says the company is now rolling out a fix that continuously accounts for the indicator. Once updated, covering the capture LED during a recording will cause the camera to stop working rather than quietly continuing.
It is a sensible change, although it also highlights the unusual privacy problem facing smart glasses. A smartphone held up in someone’s direction is reasonably easy to notice. A camera integrated into an otherwise conventional-looking pair of glasses is much less obvious, making the effectiveness of its recording indicator particularly important.
Meta has previously modified its software to prevent the camera from starting when the LED is obstructed. Closing the subsequent workaround effectively extends that safeguard throughout the recording session.
The company is also trying to make the indicator more recognisable to the public. An advertising campaign explaining how the glasses operate has begun with a billboard in Los Angeles showing the glasses with their capture light illuminated. Meta says similar educational advertising will appear elsewhere.
Himel argues that only a small number of users deliberately attempt to defeat these protections. Regardless of how common the behaviour is, however, camera-equipped eyewear has to account for deliberate misuse rather than assuming everyone will follow the intended social rules.
That concern has become more significant as Meta expands its ambitions for smart glasses. The devices have recently attracted scrutiny over reports involving facial-recognition technology being tested internally. Separately, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement reportedly reminded employees that Meta glasses were prohibited for work use after footage emerged showing ICE and Border Patrol personnel wearing them during operations.
The wider challenge has historical precedent. Google Glass demonstrated more than a decade ago that technical capability is only part of making wearable cameras acceptable. Public discomfort around being recorded by an inconspicuous device became one of the defining controversies surrounding Google’s early consumer smart glasses.
Meta’s hardware is arriving in a different market, with cameras and wearable technology now far more commonplace, but the underlying problem has not disappeared. Smart glasses become more useful as their cameras and AI capabilities improve, while those same improvements make bystanders more dependent on visible, trustworthy privacy signals.
Automatically disabling recording when the LED is covered is therefore less a clever new feature than a safeguard the product needs. The real test will be whether Meta can keep that indicator difficult to defeat as its glasses become increasingly capable.
