ChatGPT’s meeting assistant listens, summarizes and follows-up

OpenAI is pushing ChatGPT further into the daily office routine with a new Meetings plugin. It listens to conversations, writes up notes, and then tries to act on what was decided. The pitch is simple: stop typing during calls and let the assistant sort out the follow-up afterwards.

The interesting design choice is how it listens. Many meeting assistants, including Otter and Fireflies, typically join a call as a visible extra participant. ChatGPT Meetings instead runs through the ChatGPT desktop app and captures audio straight from the computer’s microphone and system output. That lets it handle in-person conversations as well as Zoom, Teams or Meet calls, and it puts ChatGPT in direct competition with bot-free note-takers like Granola.

When a meeting wraps, ChatGPT combines the transcript with any notes the user typed and context pulled from connected apps. It then produces a summary with suggested action items, saved as an editable, shareable page in ChatGPT Space. Users can also question the record afterwards, for example asking when a colleague committed to a specific task. Those action items can be passed to ChatGPT Work, which can draft a follow-up email or update a project plan using what was discussed.

Calendar integration covers Google Calendar and Outlook. ChatGPT can surface upcoming meetings, nudge users to start recording, and spot an active call even when nothing was scheduled.

That convenience comes with an obvious catch. Because there is no bot in the room, other participants receive no automatic notice that they are being recorded. OpenAI shows a prompt telling users to inform everyone and get consent, but enforcement rests entirely on the person clicking record. That matters in places with strict all-party consent rules and in workplaces with their own recording policies. OpenAI says the audio is deleted from both the Mac and its servers once processing finishes. The transcript-derived notes remain, though.

Availability is limited for now. The plugin is in beta on the macOS desktop app for ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers, and select Enterprise customers are getting access. Windows, iOS and Android support is promised, with no timeline given.

Paid users without the plugin get a lighter alternative in the form of audio file uploads. They can drop an existing recording of an interview, lecture or meeting into a regular chat and ask ChatGPT to transcribe it, summarize it, answer questions about it or draft a follow-up email. It lacks the live capture and workflow connections, but it covers the basics.

The bigger question is whether companies will trust a general-purpose chatbot with their most candid internal conversations, especially when a meeting tool built into Teams or Zoom is already part of their existing software agreements.
