Apple has started beta testing iOS 27.3, along with matching 27.3 builds for iPadOS and the rest of its operating systems, setting up what is likely the final major software update of 2026. If the usual pattern holds, a public release should arrive around late November or early December.
Rather than a single headline feature, iOS 27.3 looks like Apple’s year-end catch-up release, the place where several features promised for “later this year” are expected to finally land. That makes it more consequential than a typical point update, even if the exact contents of the beta are still being uncovered.
The most visible change expected is a redesigned Health app with new features. Health has grown steadily more complex as Apple Watch has added sensors and metrics, so a rethink of how that data is presented is overdue. The Passwords app is also expected to gain the ability to automatically update compromised or duplicate passwords, a meaningful step for a tool that has so far mostly flagged problems and left the fixing to users.
Apple Watch owners have a stake too. The Audio Intelligence features announced for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 depend on the iPhone working alongside the watch, which means they need both iOS and watchOS updates before they can ship. Buyers of the newest watches have effectively been waiting on this release to unlock what they paid for.
The update also matters internationally. Version 27.3 is expected to bring early Apple Intelligence features to China, a market where Apple’s AI rollout has lagged behind other regions and where its local competitors have been quick to push their own AI tools.
There is already at least one confirmed dependency. Apple’s new Fitness+ Gym Strength beta requires iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3 or watchOS 27.3, which suggests the update is laying groundwork for services as well as system features.
Anyone curious can try the beta now. The public beta requires signing up for Apple’s Beta Software Program with an Apple ID, enrolling the device, and then selecting the public beta from the Beta Updates section in Software Update. The developer beta needs only a free developer account, which can be set up through the Apple Developer app. The usual caution applies: early betas can be unstable, so a primary phone is not the ideal test device.
The bigger question is how much of this list actually makes the final cut. Apple has a history of quietly pushing promised features into the following year, and whether the Health redesign and Audio Intelligence arrive intact before the holidays will say a lot about how well Apple is keeping to its own roadmap.
