Apple is refining a relatively new recommendation system inside its Maps app for the next major software release. Suggested Places first appeared in iOS 26.5 earlier this year, surfacing two location ideas on the search screen drawn from current trends and a user’s recent queries. In the iOS 27 beta the same feature now supports horizontal scrolling, revealing as many as ten suggestions at once while still opening with the original pair.
The underlying logic remains unchanged. If someone has been searching for restaurants or attractions in a particular city, the system attempts to surface related options that match that context. The approach is straightforward and mirrors what other mapping services have offered for years, though Apple’s version stays tightly limited to the search interface rather than appearing across the wider app. Expanding the visible set from two to ten removes an obvious bottleneck without altering how the recommendations are generated or ranked.
In practice the change is modest. Users still receive the same style of suggestions—trending spots filtered through personal search history—only now they can browse further without leaving the screen. That incremental step may prove useful for trip planning or local exploration, yet it does not address deeper limitations such as the opacity of the ranking algorithm, the absence of stronger filters, or the lack of integration with saved collections and itineraries. Horizontal scrolling itself is a familiar interface pattern; applying it here simply makes more of the existing data accessible.
Apple has not detailed whether the expanded list draws from additional signals or merely exposes recommendations that were previously hidden. The feature continues to rely on recent activity, which raises the usual questions about how search history is weighted and how long that data influences future suggestions. For privacy-conscious users the connection between past queries and new prompts may feel either convenient or overly persistent, depending on preference.
Other Maps adjustments are also arriving with iOS 27, though the Suggested Places update stands as one of the more visible refinements to the search experience. It does not reinvent discovery inside the app so much as remove an artificial ceiling that limited its earlier usefulness. Whether the larger set of recommendations proves consistently relevant will depend on the quality of the underlying signals rather than the number of cards a user can swipe through. For now the change is a quiet usability improvement rather than a fundamental shift in how Apple Maps guides people toward new places.
