Anthropic adds Claude memory feature to free plan users

Anthropic is expanding access to Claude’s memory feature, bringing the capability to users on its free plan. The update means free-tier users can now allow Claude to reference past conversations to shape future responses, a function that was previously limited to paid subscribers.

Anthropic first introduced memory for Claude in August, positioning it as a way to make interactions more consistent over time. Later updates added the ability to compartmentalize memories, giving users more granular control over what the chatbot retains. With this latest change, the company is extending that functionality to a broader audience at a time when competition among AI chatbot platforms remains intense.

When enabling memory, users can choose how persistent the feature should be. It can be paused, preserving stored information for later use, or fully disabled with stored memories deleted from Anthropic’s servers. This approach reflects a growing emphasis across the AI industry on user control and data transparency, particularly as more conversational systems adopt long-term context retention.

The rollout comes shortly after Anthropic made it easier for users to import past chats from a competing chatbot into Claude. The timing suggests a coordinated effort to lower switching barriers and increase engagement among free users. Memory, combined with chat import tools, makes Claude more adaptable for people who rely on conversational AI for ongoing projects, research, or personal organization.

Claude has recently seen a surge in visibility, reaching the top position in the Apple App Store’s free app rankings. While app store performance can fluctuate, the milestone indicates growing consumer awareness and adoption beyond enterprise or developer audiences.

At the same time, Anthropic faces pressure outside the consumer market. The company is currently involved in a contract dispute with the US government concerning AI safeguards and usage terms. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently described Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” after the company declined to sign a contract that would have allowed its models to be used by the Pentagon in surveillance and autonomous weapons contexts. Anthropic has said it intends to challenge that designation.

The broader context underscores how AI platforms such as Claude are navigating two parallel tracks: rapid consumer feature expansion and complex regulatory or government negotiations. By bringing memory to its free plan, Anthropicstrengthens Claude’s competitive position in the consumer AI chatbot space, while debates over AI governance and military applications continue to unfold.
