Adobe Premiere finally hits Android, and CapCut should pay attention

Adobe Premiere has finally arrived on Android, giving creators on Google’s mobile platform access to Adobe’s redesigned video editor almost a year after it debuted on iPhone. The launch also gives Android another serious alternative to mobile-first editors such as CapCut, with Adobe offering much of Premiere’s core experience for free.

Premiere for Android brings a multi-track timeline designed for editing video, audio, text and effects directly on a phone. Users can trim footage with frame-level precision, apply transitions and filters, record voiceovers and work with templates, including options intended for YouTube content. The app also supports 4K editing and exports without forcing a watermark onto finished videos.

Adobe has included several AI-assisted features as well. Enhance Audio can clean up dialogue, while Firefly-powered generative tools can create or modify assets, including sound effects. Some of those generative features require credits or additional payment, meaning “free” doesn’t necessarily cover every workflow available inside the app.

The Android release is more significant than simply porting an iPhone application. Android hardware ranges from conventional smartphones to tablets and increasingly elaborate foldables, so Adobe has adapted Premiere’s interface to different screen sizes. That could make devices such as large-screen foldables particularly interesting for mobile editing, where additional timeline space has obvious practical value.

Compatibility does impose a reasonably modern baseline. Premiere requires Android 13 or newer and at least 5GB of RAM, which should cover many recent mid-range and flagship devices but leaves older Android hardware behind.

The launch also completes Adobe’s transition away from Premiere Rush, its previous attempt at simplified mobile video editing. Rush is being discontinued as Adobe shifts its attention toward this newer generation of Premiere mobile apps.

There are still gaps compared with Adobe’s broader Premiere ecosystem. Features including Adobe Fonts and parts of the mobile-to-desktop workflow remain under development, so creators expecting their phone to function as a completely interchangeable extension of desktop Premiere may need to wait for future updates.

Even so, Premiere arriving on Android changes the competitive landscape. CapCut and other mobile editors have spent years building enormous creator audiences while Adobe’s strongest video brand remained primarily associated with desktop production. Bringing a capable, watermark-free Premiere editor to Android is Adobe’s clearest attempt yet to close that gap — even if it has arrived considerably later than its rivals.
