Neumann U 47 fet Bon Scott edition honors rock vocal history

Neumann has released a limited edition of its U 47 fet studio microphone dedicated to Bon Scott, the influential frontman of AC/DC. Titled the U 47 fet Bon Scott Edition, the model honors the singer whose raw, powerful voice helped shape hard rock in the 1970s. Only 300 units will be produced worldwide, each combining standard technical performance with commemorative design elements and premium packaging.

The microphone builds directly on the current production reissue of the U 47 fet, a solid-state model originally introduced in 1972 as a successor to the earlier tube version. Engineers have long valued its ability to manage high sound pressure levels and deliver a clear midrange presence, qualities that suited demanding vocal styles. During AC/DC sessions, producers Harry Vanda and George Young reportedly selected the U 47 fet for Scott’s explosive delivery on tracks from albums like Let There Be Rock. The mic’s headroom allowed his voice to maintain character and cut through dense guitar arrangements without excessive compression or loss of edge, contributing to the band’s signature aggressive yet controlled sound.

This special edition retains identical audio characteristics to the standard model, including handling up to 137 dB SPL or 147 dB with the pad engaged. It remains suitable for vocals, guitar amplifiers, bass, and kick drums in professional studios. Visually, the unit features a matte black finish, Bon Scott graphics, and his signature on the body. It comes in a black wooden box accompanied by a collector’s booklet that includes an interview with producer Harry Vanda. Each microphone is individually numbered, emphasizing its scarcity for enthusiasts and collectors.

The release arrives on what would have been Scott’s 80th birthday, July 9, 2026. A portion of proceeds will support Support Act Australia, an organization aiding music industry professionals facing hardship. In the United States, distribution is limited to select retailers such as Sweetwater and Guitar Center.

Studio microphones occupy an interesting place in audio history. The original Neumann U 47 family, dating back to the late 1940s, set benchmarks for clarity and reliability that influenced countless recordings across genres. Reissues like the fet version keep these tools accessible while preserving sonic signatures prized by engineers. Yet special editions also illustrate the growing overlap between professional equipment and memorabilia markets. While the tribute feels fitting given Scott’s documented use of the mic, such limited runs inevitably blend genuine homage with collectible appeal, potentially pricing them beyond many working musicians.

For those who can acquire one, the Bon Scott Edition offers both functional performance and a tangible link to rock’s past. It serves as a reminder of how specific gear choices can shape an era’s sound, even as recording technology continues evolving toward more versatile and affordable digital alternatives. The partnership with the Bon Scott Estate underscores ongoing interest in preserving legacies from rock’s formative decades.
