Hoka refines bestselling cushioned runner with targeted changes

Hoka Clifton 11 running shoe refines a popular daily trainer with subtle comfort tweaks. The latest iteration in a long-running series arrives roughly 15 months after its predecessor, continuing a pattern seen across the industry where established models receive measured updates rather than complete overhauls. This approach reflects caution among major brands, who recognise that loyal runners value reliability over constant reinvention, especially in versatile daily trainers suited for everything from easy miles to marathon preparation.

At its core, the Clifton 11 builds on familiar foundations. It keeps the compression-moulded EVA foam midsole, rearfoot-focused Active Foot Frame, and signature MetaRocker geometry that have defined the line for over a decade. The 8mm heel-to-toe drop and high-stack cushioning remain, delivering the smooth transitions runners have come to expect. Weight stays competitive at around 283 grams for a men’s sample and 236 grams for women’s, positioning it as a lightweight option without venturing into minimalist territory. These constants suggest Hoka prioritised consistency while addressing feedback on everyday wear.

The primary changes focus on the upper and interior. A new engineered jacquard knit aims for better breathability and a softer feel against the foot, paired with an updated ultrasoft sockliner for improved step-in comfort. Designers added a double lace-lock system for a more secure hold and incorporated reflective elements for low-light visibility. Such refinements target practical concerns like fit and all-day usability, areas where small enhancements can make a noticeable difference over long distances without altering the shoe’s fundamental character.

In a crowded field, the Clifton 11 will compete against longstanding alternatives including the Brooks Ghost 18, ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28, Saucony Ride 19, New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v15, and Nike Pegasus 42. Each offers its own take on cushioning and ride, yet they share a common purpose as dependable workhorses. Pricing at £140 in the UK, $155 in the US, €165 in Europe, and AU$280 in Australia places it firmly in the premium segment while undercutting some rivals, which may appeal to value-conscious runners wary of escalating costs in performance footwear.

The running shoe market has increasingly favoured evolutionary progress, particularly for high-volume sellers. Radical redesigns risk alienating core users, as evidenced by occasional missteps from competitors chasing trends in super foams or plated racers. Hoka’s strategy with the Clifton series appears more measured, leaning on its established reputation for plush cushioning. That said, some experienced runners might question whether these incremental gains justify the update cycle, especially if previous versions already met their needs adequately.

Ultimately, the Clifton 11 represents a thoughtful continuation rather than a bold departure. For those who have appreciated the model’s balanced ride and forgiving feel, it offers subtle improvements that could enhance the running experience without introducing uncertainty. The shoe is available now from Hoka and authorised retailers worldwide.
