Xbox Game Pass adds Dune, Minecraft and Gears in huge update

Microsoft is loading the second half of September with a sizeable Xbox Game Pass update, mixing major releases such as Dune: Awakening with day-one arrivals including Minecraft Dungeons 2 and Gears of War: E-Day. The latest wave stretches into early October, giving Ultimate and PC subscribers several notable launches alongside an expanded Premium catalogue.

Dune: Awakening is one of the biggest additions, arriving September 22 across cloud, Xbox Series X/S, handheld and PC for Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and PC Game Pass. Funcom’s survival game brings the harsh world of Arrakis into the subscription library, making it a potentially significant addition for players who were interested in the game but reluctant to buy in immediately.

The more important story, however, may be Microsoft’s continued use of day-one releases to distinguish its higher Game Pass tiers. Minecraft Dungeons 2 arrives September 29 for Ultimate and PC Game Pass, followed by Gears of War: E-Day on October 6. The latter is particularly notable given Gears’ long-standing position as one of Xbox’s defining franchises.

Premium subscribers are getting a broader selection of previously released games. Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Planet of Lana II, Routine, Ultimate Sheep Raccoon and Ninja Gaiden 4 join the tier on September 16 and 17. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 follows on September 25, while Keeper becomes available through Premium on October 2.

Elsewhere, RuneScape: Dragonwilds joins Ultimate, Premium and PC Game Pass on September 15. Kernel Hearts arrives September 17 for Ultimate and PC, followed by Well Dweller on September 22. Mad King Redemption lands September 23 across all three listed Game Pass tiers.

As usual, the expanding library comes with departures. Eight games are scheduled to leave Xbox Game Pass on September 30: Atomfall, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Little Nightmares 2 Enhanced Edition, Little Rocket Lab, Sifu, SOPA Tale of the Stolen Potato, Sworn and Terminull Brigade.

The September update illustrates Microsoft’s increasingly tiered approach to Game Pass. Premium gets a deeper back catalogue, while Ultimate and PC Game Pass retain some of the service’s most valuable day-one releases. With Minecraft Dungeons 2 and Gears of War: E-Day arriving only a week apart, October is effectively beginning before September’s Game Pass lineup has finished.
